Relisting means removing an old listing and posting the same item again as a brand-new one. Sellers do it when a listing has gone quiet: it’s been up a while, the clicks have dried up, and Facebook no longer offers to renew it.

Facebook doesn’t have a “relist” button, so you have to do it by hand. Here’s how to do it without retyping everything from memory.

Before you start: should you renew instead?

If Facebook still offers Renew on the listing (⋯ → Renew), use that first. Renewing moves the listing up and keeps its saves, messages and link. Relisting starts from zero. There’s a full comparison in Renew vs relist.

Relist when Renew isn’t offered anymore, or the listing has been up for weeks with very few clicks.

Relisting by hand

1. Save everything from the old listing

Open the listing’s Edit page and copy out every field into a note: title, price, category, condition, description, and anything else that category has (size, brand, mileage, bedrooms…).

Then save the photos. If you still have the originals on your phone, use those, since they’re better quality.

2. Remove the old listing

Go to your Selling page, find the listing, and use ⋯ → Delete listing.

Removing it first means Facebook doesn’t see two identical listings from you at the same time. The downside: for a few minutes, the item isn’t on Marketplace at all.

3. Create the new listing

Create a new listing of the same type (item, vehicle or property). Pick the category first, because the category decides which other fields appear on the form.

Then fill in each field from your note and upload the photos in the same order, cover photo first.

4. Check it, then publish

Read it through before you hit Publish. Things that commonly go wrong when copying by hand: the wrong category, a missing size or condition, photos in the wrong order.

Things to be careful about

  • Don’t relist the same thing over and over in one day. Facebook may limit accounts that post a lot. It doesn’t publish its limits, so keep it modest.
  • Two listings with the same title make it easy to delete the wrong one. Double-check before deleting.
  • If the item already sold or is pending, mark it sold instead of relisting it.
  • Relisting doesn’t guarantee more views. It can wake up a listing that’s gone quiet, but if a listing has plenty of clicks and no sale, the price is more likely the problem.

The faster way

If you relist regularly, the copying is the slow part. Marketplace Listing Assistant is a Chrome extension I built for exactly this. It saves each listing once (every field plus full-size photos), then:

  1. Finds the old listing on your Selling page and asks before removing it
  2. Opens Facebook’s new-listing form and fills it in, category first, then every field, then the photos
  3. Waits for you to look it over and click Publish yourself

It also stops and asks when something looks off, like two listings with the same title, an item marked sold, or a price that changed on Facebook. It’s free for 2 reposts a day.
