Sites for local businesses
Web apps
Bigger builds, with search, accounts and new content every day.
What I can help with
The website is only part of it. When someone looks you up, they also see your Google listing, your reviews and your Instagram. I can take care of all of it, so it looks like one business.
Your website
- A new website
- Designed around your business and written so a customer understands what you do in about five seconds. It has to work well on a phone, since that’s where most people will see it.
- Fixing the one you have
- Sometimes a site needs a rebuild. Often it needs a faster host, clearer wording and a working contact form. I’ll tell you which.
- Menus, bookings, orders, quotes
- Whatever you want customers to do online, I’ll make it obvious. That usually means connecting the tools you already use, like Square, OpenTable or Calendly, instead of replacing them.
- Something more custom
- Directories, booking systems, customer portals. FarmsLinked and Easy French News, further up the page, are both custom builds.
Everything else people find when they search for you
- Google Business Profile
- For a lot of people this is your business, before they ever see the website. Right hours, good photos, the right categories, and someone keeping an eye on it.
- Reviews
- An easy way to ask happy customers for one, like a QR code by the till or a link on the receipt. And help writing replies, including to the unfair ones.
- Maps, directories and delivery apps
- Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Uber Eats and the rest. Same name, address, phone and hours everywhere, so nobody turns up while you’re closed.
- Instagram and Facebook
- Profiles set up or tidied up, matching the rest of your brand, with the menu, booking link and hours where people expect them.
- Business email and your domain
- hello@yourbusiness.ca instead of a Gmail address. A small thing, but customers notice.
- Logo and brand basics
- A simple logo, colours and fonts, so the sign, the menu, Instagram and the website all look like the same place.
Then I look after it
Hosting, backups and updates, plus the small changes: new hours, a new menu, holiday closures. One message to me, and it’s updated on the website, Google and everywhere else.
How it usually goes
You don’t need to know anything about websites. That’s my job.
- 1.
We talk
A 20-minute call. You tell me about the business, and I ask what you want the site to do. Calls, bookings, fewer “are you open?” messages.
- 2.
You get a quote
A fixed price and a timeline, usually within two business days. If something isn’t worth the money, I’ll say so.
- 3.
I build it
You see a working version early and we adjust from there. Most small sites take two to four weeks. The usual hold-up is photos and text, so I’ll help with those.
- 4.
It goes live
I set up the domain, hosting, Google listing and anything else we agreed on. After that I’m still around for changes.
What does it cost?
It depends on what you need, and I’m flexible on how we get there.
Ask me for a quoteTell me your budget
Even a rough number helps. I’ll tell you what I can build for it, and what I’d leave out.
You get a fixed quote
Once we’ve talked, you get one price for the whole job, in writing. It doesn’t change unless you ask for something new.
Start small if you want
Plenty of businesses start with a single page and add more once it’s paying for itself. That’s a perfectly good plan.
Ongoing care is optional
If you’d like me to handle hosting, updates and small changes, there’s a simple monthly plan. If not, the site is yours to run.
A bit about me
I’m Nikita, a web developer in Calgary. I’ve been building websites and web apps for a few years now, and lately most of it has been for food businesses and contractors: ramen shops, a bento kitchen, a renovation company. The website is usually where it starts, but being easy to find on Google, Maps and Instagram is what brings people through the door.
Small businesses tend to get stuck with one of two options. An agency, which is expensive and slow. Or a do-it-yourself builder, which eats your evenings and still looks like a template. I try to be the third option: one person who does it properly, at a price that makes sense, and picks up the phone afterwards.
You deal with me the whole way through. Nobody hands you off to an account manager. The domain goes in your name, the price is agreed before I start, and if you ever want to move on, you take everything with you.
Nikita
From the blog
All postsDo I need a website if I already have Instagram?
Instagram is great for showing what you do. It’s bad at the things people search for. Here’s why most small businesses still need a simple website.
What should go on a small business homepage?
Most homepages try to say everything and end up saying nothing. Here’s what a customer is actually looking for, in the order they look for it.
How to set up your Google Business Profile properly
For a lot of customers, your Google listing is your business. Here’s how to set it up so it actually brings people in, step by step.
Common questions
Didn’t see yours? Just ask.
I already have a website. Can you just help with Google and social media?
Yes. A lot of the work is exactly that: sorting out your Google profile, reviews, listings and social accounts so they all say the same thing. You don’t need a new website to start.
How much will my website cost?
It depends on how many pages you need and whether there’s booking or ordering involved. Tell me what you have to spend and I’ll suggest what makes sense for that. You’ll get a fixed price before anything starts.
How long does it take?
Two weeks for a one-page site, three or four for something bigger. Honestly, it mostly depends on how fast we get your photos and text together.
Do I own it?
Yes. The domain is registered in your name, and the content and code are yours. If you ever want to move to someone else, I’ll help you do it.
Can I change things myself later?
If you want to, I can set that up. Most owners would rather send me a message, which is what the monthly care plan covers. Small changes are usually done the same or next day.
Will I show up on Google?
I’ll set up everything that helps: your Google Business Profile, page titles, a fast mobile site. Anyone who guarantees you the top spot is lying, though. Reviews and time matter too.
I’m not in Calgary. Does that matter?
Not at all. Most of the businesses I’ve worked with are in Toronto and Richmond, BC. We do it over calls and email.
Tell me about your business
A few sentences is plenty. What you do, where you are, and what isn’t working online right now.
I’ll reply within a business day, and if it sounds like a fit we’ll set up a short call. There’s no cost and no obligation.
